Welcome to Project Mason Bee

Mason bees are solitary and native to North America. They very rarely sting unless provoked, as they don’t have a hive to protect. The San Diego Beekeeping Society is sponsoring this project to educate young people about bees in a safer environment. We hope that this website will be utilized to its maximum capability and learn from each other’s experience.

We have no cocoons at this time. However, this project could successfully be done without a cocoon. A companion project, “The Great Sunflower Project” is also available for people who want to participate. We will provide you with sunflower seeds if needed. Mason bees will visit your sunflower plant often.

If you want to take part in this project you have to do the following things

  1. Signup as a member and become an active participant

  2. Get familiar with available resources

  3. Educate yourself about mason bees, dwelling requirements, and life cycle

  4. Build a suitable domicile for the bees

  5. Submit a request for mason bee cocoons (If available)

  6. Pick mason bee cocoons from designated locations or follow alternative approach

  7. Observe and share your observation at all times at this forum
